UNP example...

PROF is a program for drawing 3D (or 2D) standard profiles in steel like HEA, or you can draw basic profiles. PROF was written somewhere in 1993.

Tables are not updated since, so if a steel vendor reads this: you are invited to put some effort in it. And a Python version would be great to get this working under LT and other CAD packages.

If you run PROF in AutoCAD the options are discussed below. If you cancel PROF when it asks for an extrusion height you get a 2D drawing (explodable REGION) of the desired profile. PROF is written in LISP, so it only runs on AutoCAD.

Warm / standardized profiles are according to DIN. PROF reads information from .CAT files for those profiles, and calculates geometry. The format is similar to the format you'll often find in your suppliers documentation.

Tutor (small intro)

Maybe you never worked 3D, maybe you did. PROF is easy to use. So let's go / show! We are going to make the following in a few easy steps. We use 2x HEA 200, 1x UNP180 and 2x tube square 50x4:

First split your screen in 4 views: tut_01.png . Now you have to define your working plane. Click on the view where only the Z- and X-axis are shown. Define this as your working plane by clicking on tut_02.png . The value of the axis are now X and Y. Let's insert a HEA profile of 200mm height, and 1000mm long: tut_03.png 200; 0,0; 0; 1000;; Now you should see something like:

Don't change your viewport, do a plain COPY command ( tut_05.png ) and put the copy 700 to the left (i.e. cp; last;; 0,0; -700,0;).

Next step is to add a UNP180. Click on the view where the Z- and Y-axis are shown. Define this as you working plane ( tut_02.png ).

The flange of our HEA200 is 200mm (see tables below) so the extruded length should be 700 + 200 = 900mm. The value of the axis are now X and Y. Do your insert work smart so look at the picture from the UNP:

IP should be top right (see below), the corner is 180 degrees and extrusion length is negative (away from you). Since we work in 10mm units, switch on snapping (F9 and or right mouse click on snap button at bottom of acad screen). So insert the UNP: tut_06.png 180*70; ins.point 180; -890;; Now you should have:

You have to MOVE the UNP profile in Z direction over half the flange width: tut_08.png last; 0,0; 0,0,100; in order to get this:

The next part is to add two tubes, square, 50x4 with a length of 500mm. After carefully having done the previous you are able to do this yourself, so go ahead.

Then you want to show your work and examine it!. Choose the isometric viewport and tut_10.png . Right click and choose shading mode: Gouroud shading. Then start walking around your model by dragging your mouse to get this:!
